Tesla FSD in Europe: First Accident Statistics from the Netherlands, Approval in Denmark

Summary

Tesla publishes first FSD safety data from the Netherlands: 3.5 times fewer accidents than human drivers. Additionally, FSD Supervised receives approval in Denmark – the fourth EU country.

Tesla has published the first official safety data for FSD Supervised in the Netherlands. The highly automated driving system showed a significant improvement: zero accidents over 16.6 million kilometers – a 3.5 times better result compared to human drivers. In parallel, Tesla received approval for FSD Supervised in Denmark, the fourth EU country after the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. This step underscores Tesla's strategy of obtaining approvals country by country rather than waiting for an EU-wide authorization.

[NOTE] > The Dutch data is based on vehicles with FSD Supervised activated, which hands control back to the driver upon deactivation. The statistics do not include driver interventions.

Europe Rollout Accelerates

After months of preparation, Tesla has presented the first real road data for FSD Supervised in the Netherlands. According to a recent report, the system is now officially approved in Denmark. This follows the approval in Flanders/Belgium at the end of 2024 and the approval in Germany. The EU Commission initially pushed for a central regulation, but Tesla chooses the path via national authorities such as the Dutch RDW. The approach is reminiscent of the approval strategy in the UK.

Key Facts at a Glance:

  • Netherlands: First FSD safety data; zero accidents over 16.6 million km

  • Denmark: Fourth EU country with FSD Supervised approval

  • EU Countries with Approval: Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Denmark

  • Approval Process: National approval via RDW, not via EU type approval

Software Update and HW Compatibility

Tesla has confirmed that FSD Supervised in the Netherlands runs on vehicles with Hardware 3 (HW3) and HW4 using the current software version (2024.xx). The function can be activated on highways and selected main roads. Manual takeover is possible at any time. Tesla plans to tighten driver monitoring to comply with regulatory requirements.

[IMPORTANT] > The European version of FSD Supervised differs from the US version due to stricter requirements: No alpha-beta functions, no full city traffic, mandatory driver engagement at all times.

Outlook: More Countries to Follow

Analysts expect Tesla to introduce FSD Supervised in additional EU countries such as France, Sweden, and Austria within the first half of 2025. Wall Street analyst Dan Ives already sees Tesla at Level 4 of autonomous driving, while Tesla itself speaks of "Supervised." The Dutch accident data is cited by Tesla as evidence of superior safety.
