Tesla FSD put through its paces: 150 miles on the Pennsylvania Turnpike – the good and the bad

Summary

A Tesla Model Y equipped with FSD v14.3.3 completes a 150-mile journey on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The test highlights both strengths and weaknesses, but leaves a positive overall impression.

I recently took my Tesla Model Y, equipped with Full Self-Driving (Supervised) v14.3.3, for a 150-mile drive on the Pennsylvania Turnpike to put the system through a real-world stress test. There were plenty of good moments, but also a few bad ones. Overall, however, I was impressed by Full Self-Driving.

The good moments

On the motorway, FSD drove with confidence. The lane-keeping assist worked precisely, and the vehicle changed lanes autonomously to overtake slow-moving traffic. The response to roadworks was particularly impressive: the system recognised the temporary road markings and adjusted the speed in good time. Merging onto the motorway also went smoothly.

The bad moments

In complex traffic situations, such as partially obscured junctions, the system sometimes hesitated. On one occasion, it braked abruptly when a lorry cut in from the adjacent lane – it felt unsafe, even though the reaction was correct. FSD also struggled in heavy rain: the cameras got wet and the system temporarily deactivated itself.
[IMPORTANT] > The test shows that FSD is already very reliable on motorways, but there is still room for improvement in urban environments and in bad weather. For European users hoping for approval, this provides insight into the current state of affairs.

Outlook and links

The progress made by FSD is undeniable. Whilst the US already permits extensive testing, Europe is awaiting regulatory approval. The article on Tesla FSD (Supervised): EU-wide approval meets with resistance. The tests in London as preparation for Europe also illustrate the path forward. And the question of whether Tesla’s Full Self-Driving is not good enough for Europe? remains open.

Conclusion

The stress test shows: FSD is getting better and better, but it is not yet perfect. It is a great asset for motorway driving, but you should remain vigilant in town. Upcoming updates, such as FSD V14: The second-biggest FSD update ever, promise further improvements.
