Since the Dutch authority RDW granted an exceptional approval for Tesla's advanced assistance system FSD in its territory, customers in other EU countries are increasingly hoping to soon be able to use this option, which has been on sale for years. In fact, the rest of the EU could follow individually or collectively. An EU committee has now been informed about the developments – however, internal emails from the run-up show a skeptical attitude.
Current status in Europe
The RDW approval currently applies only to the Netherlands. Tesla must now demonstrate that FSD can be operated safely in other countries as well. The EU Commission has established a committee to coordinate further approval.
Skepticism among member states
Even before the committee's information session, several national representatives expressed concerns via email. Criticized were above all:
- Insufficient data on accidents involving FSD
- Lack of harmonization of approval criteria
- Safety concerns in complex traffic situations
Outlook
Tesla is simultaneously working on adapting the FSD software for Europe. The results of the EU committee are crucial. If skepticism prevails, a delay threatens. Customers can only hope for a swift expansion – similar to Tesla's robotaxi plans.
