First EU Approval: Tesla Activates

Summary

Tesla has received the first EU approval for its FSD system in the Netherlands. The supervised Autopilot upgrade is now active in an EU member state.

Milestone for Tesla FSD in Europe

Tesla has taken a significant step towards autonomous driving in Europe. As the company confirmed, the "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" system has been officially approved and activated in the Netherlands for the first time. This makes it the first EU country where the controversial but cutting-edge driving software can be legally used.

Netherlands as a Pioneer

The Dutch road traffic authority RDW has approved the release. FSD (Supervised) allows the vehicle to steer, accelerate, and brake autonomously on highways and rural roads, but still requires the driver's full attention. Activation occurs via an over-the-air update.

[NOTE] > FSD (Supervised) is not fully autonomous driving. The driver must be ready to take control at all times. The system corresponds to SAE Level 2.

Impact on Other EU Countries

The approval in the Netherlands could serve as a blueprint for other EU states. Previously, only Estonia and Lithuania had given the green light, but not as EU members with the same regulations. Germany, France, and the UK are currently reviewing the requirements.

[IMPORTANT] > The approval in the Netherlands could increase pressure on other EU authorities to accelerate similar releases.

Technical Details

Tesla FSD is based on a neural network that processes real-time data from cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors. The current version V12 uses pure AI approaches without line-by-line programming. For the upgrade, Hardware 3 or newer is required.

Vehicle TypeHW3HW4

Key Facts

  • Feature: Highway assistant, lane changes, automatic parking function, traffic light and stop sign recognition
  • Cost: In the Netherlands, available only as a subscription for €99/month
  • Driver monitoring: Interior camera checks attentiveness

Future in Europe

Tesla is working to get FSD approved in further EU countries. The most important step is recognition under the UNECE regulation, which harmonizes Level 2 systems. [Tesla FSD (Supervised): EU-wide approval faces resistance]

Customer Voice

"Since the update, highway driving feels more relaxed. But I never take my hands completely off the steering wheel," a Dutch Tesla driver reports on Twitter.
