Estonia opens the door to Tesla FSD: A turning point for Europe’s roads?
The latest news from Estonia sends a clear signal to the whole of Europe: Tesla continues to make unstoppable progress on the continent in the field of autonomous driving. On 30 May 2026, Estonia officially granted approval for Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. This move is not only a triumph for Tesla, but also a clear indicator of how rapidly autonomous driving technology is developing and how much pressure is on European regulators to keep pace with this speed.
The YouTube video “【Tesla Daily Briefing】 FSD scores another victory in Europe! Estonia officially approves, regulators can’t keep up with Tesla’s real-world pace🔥SpaceX sweeps up Space Force contracts (30/05/2026)” highlights this milestone and emphasises the discrepancy between Tesla’s practical implementation speed and the often slower legislative processes. For fans and critics alike, this marks a further expansion of the FSD Beta in Europe, a continent traditionally known for its strict regulations.
The European regulatory landscape: a complex puzzle
The approval of systems such as Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) in Europe is a complex undertaking that goes far beyond technical feasibility. Every country within the EU has its own interpretations of the UNECE regulations concerning autonomous driving. Whilst the UNECE regulations provide a framework, there remains considerable scope for national laws and regulations. Estonia’s decision could serve as a blueprint for other, smaller European states that are open to technological innovation.
As previously discussed in our article No approval in passing: Why EU approval for Tesla FSD (Supervised) is not a foregone conclusion, the path to widespread European FSD approval is anything but straightforward. Nevertheless, countries such as Estonia, as well as the Netherlands and Lithuania, are showing a growing willingness to evaluate and integrate the advanced software. Tesla FSD conquers Europe: After the Netherlands, now Lithuania too has already described the initial successes in these countries.
Milestones in FSD expansion in Europe
Tesla is pursuing a strategy of gradual expansion in Europe. The software updates for FSD are continuously being improved, and every new approval in a European country is proof of the system’s maturity and adaptability to different driving conditions and traffic regulations. The following example shows the progress made so far:
