Historic FSD triumph: Tesla crosses Canada autonomously – what does this mean for Europe’s roads?
The world of autonomous driving has reached a spectacular new milestone: three passionate Tesla drivers have completed an epic 6,000-kilometre journey across Canada – from British Columbia to Nova Scotia. What makes this special is that the entire journey was completed without any human intervention, using Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. David Moss, Devin Olsen and Spencer claim to have thus completed the world’s first fully autonomous coast-to-coast journey of its kind.
A technological leap that is making waves worldwide
This incredible achievement is impressive proof of the maturity and progress of the FSD Beta software. A Tesla vehicle navigates autonomously through a wide variety of traffic situations, changes lanes, handles motorway junctions and drives through cities, covering a distance equivalent to the straight-line distance from Lisbon to Moscow. For many critics and sceptics of Tesla’s Autopilot system, this is a clear sign that the promise of autonomous driving is within reach. It demonstrates the software’s impressive ability to process complex driving scenarios and make real-time decisions, supported by Tesla’s neural network.
Looking to Europe: Challenges and Opportunities
Whilst North America, particularly the US and Canada, serves as a testing ground for Tesla’s FSD Beta, Europe is watching these developments with keen interest. European regulations, particularly those of the UNECE, are significantly stricter and define levels of autonomous driving differently to the US. As a result, the FSD software is often only used here in a limited version, which is more akin to a highly advanced driver assistance system than true Level 4 autonomous driving.
FSD in North America vs. Europe: A Comparison
The success stories from Canada are fuelling the debate on when and how a comparable approval for Tesla FSD will be possible on European roads. Tesla is currently making progress, as demonstrated by the rollout in the Netherlands and Lithuania.
